How to Choose Carp Fishing Tackle

Getting started with carp fishing? The right tackle makes all the difference. Here's what you need.

The Rod

For carp fishing, you'll want a carp rod between 10ft and 13ft. The test curve determines what weight of fish you can handle:

• 2.5lb - 3lb test curve: Ideal for most UK and European carp waters, handling fish up to 30lb
• 3lb - 3.5lb test curve: For larger fish or fishing at distance
• 3.5lb+ test curve: Big pit casting or heavily weeded waters

The Reel

A baitrunner or big pit reel with a smooth drag is essential. Look for:

• 5000-8000 size: Covers most carp fishing scenarios
• Baitrunner feature: Allows fish to take line freely before you strike
• Multiple bearings: 4+ ball bearings for smooth operation
• Aluminium spool: More durable than graphite for repeated use

Essential Rigs

1. Hair Rig — The classic. Thread bait onto a hair below the hook so the carp picks up the bait and hook together
2. Zig Rig — For fishing at mid-water depths when carp are cruising
